Los Angeles is an impressive food city. Restaurants run by world famous chefs to small ethnic grocery stores packed with goodies you’ll never find in the usual markets. There is no need to go to chain eateries because every neighborhood has its share of unique dining spots. Most towns have local farmers markets at least once a week, so fresh and organic ingredients are always at the finger tip. We’re lucky. The only thing missing is good Chinese! Maybe that’s a bit harsh. It’s not that Chinese food is the worst here…it’s just not the same as what we remember from our days on the East coast. So when takeout just won’t do, here’s our solution.
As the name implies, this is a flavorful and quick dish. Hoisin adds a sweet kick to the sauce, which pairs well with the sriracha. Instead of using all soy sauce, we added fish sauce to the mix. Fish sauce is a prime ingredient in many Thai and Vietnamese dishes, but you can also find it in Southern Chinese cooking.
Ginger Garlic Vegetable Stir Fry – Serves 4
2 tablespoons grapeseed oil
1 teaspoon sesame oil
4 tablespoons hoisin
2 teaspoons fish sauce
1 teaspoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons sriracha
2 yellow peppers, sliced
1/2 pound cremini mushrooms, chopped
1/2 pound broccoli florets
1/2 pound snow peas
2 carrots, grated
2 1/2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced
4 cloves garlic, minced
10 ounces water
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1. Heat oils in a wok or wide pan. Add garlic and onions and cook approximately 2 minutes.
2. Add peppers, broccoli and mushrooms. Cook until onions and peppers soften, approximately 3-4 minutes.
3. Add ginger, hoisin, fish sauce, soy sauce and sriracha. Stir well.
4. Mix cornstarch into the water and add to vegetables, along with carrots and snow peas. Allow to simmer until sauce begins to thicken, approximately 5-7 minutes.
5. Serve over rice or noodles.

Don’t Knock It ‘Til You Try It

Absolutely no need for takeout when you can create this at home. I like how it’s veggie only – pigging out on lots of meat lately and I need a little break!
There is nothing better than NYC Chinese food! But that looks delicious!
I’m always on the look out for new stir-fry recipes. This one looks great! I’ve actually never used hoisin sauce before so will have to try this soon.
P.S. Have you ever been to Mandarette on Beverly Blvd and Orlando in West Hollywood? It’s actually quite good. I love their strawberry shrimp.
Stir-frys are the best way to get veggies into the diet. I especially love crisp snow peas.
Very nice. I haven’t yet mastered many Asian takeout solutions… but from the look of this, I seriously ought to consider trying. Nothing like a good, quick stirfry.
My Good Lord God In Heaven above, does that ever look so dleiciously terrific!!! It certainly looks like it comes from a 5 star restaurant. LOVE it. I want some. Whenever am I getting an invite!
the glassy seductive rice noodle will lure me everytime…
I love a good veggie stir fry, and this looks great!
What a beautiful stir-fry you have there! Definitely no need for take-out! Yum!
I should really stop reading your blog before dinner. I’m hungry.
That does sound good! Wow, I adore chinese so there is no doubt I will try this out.
A quick veggie stir fry with sesame oil, soy, ginger and garlic is one of my great standby dinners. Everytime I make it (or in this case, when I look at yours) I wonder why I don’t make it more often!
I’ve been making a lot of Chinese dishes lately myself. I find my body handles it better when I make it at home (rather than eat it out!) This look delish!
Wow. This look outstanding – love the flavors.
I love the texture and the sauce on Chinese veges. Even vegetable hating friends will eat it. It looks great!
Mm-mM! That looks light but really satisfying. Your addition of fish sauce caught my interest, as I’m starting to look for ways to use it in dishes that don’t necessarily call for it. Oh, and congrats for being chosen to appear on Foodie Blogroll’s “Finest Foodies Friday”!
It both looks and sounds wonderful. Will have to give this one a try!
I wish I could make my own Chinese! This rivals any restaurant!
This looks delicious – we have good chinese good nearby, but no good mexican food!
Looks fabulous!

Looks delicious… and I hadn’t heard of sriracha before! thanks.
That looks fantastic! I love making Chinese food, I usually do it a couple times a month.
You do need to hit up San Gabriel Valley for some amazing Chinese food! I love your colorful and vibrant stirfry, so I see excellent Chinese in LA, at your house!
This looks delicious, and healthy to boot!
Sometimes it is way better to make your own! :O)
Wow that looks yummy, Duo. No need to pine for take out when you’ve got these kind of skills! And no doubt its healthier too. Love it!
Love it! Sapuch noted the fish sauce but it was the sriracha that caught my eye – delicious!
Oh my GAWD, are you serious? No good Chinese takeout place in LA?? Head out to San Gabriel pronto!! I always go there for good Chinese food… if you go down Valley Blvd, you’ll pass tons of Chinese restaurants, each one more awesome than the next. Although if you live close to downtown LA I guess it is quite a long drive… =(
Your dish looks aaaamazing. I’m drooling over here… fish sauce, sriracha… mmm!! Beautiful!
I completely understand the “where are the good chinese restaurants?” There is a great chinese restaurant I miss so much in Costa Mesa. NOT a buffet. A real neighborhood delicious place not far from South Coast Plaza if you’re ever in OC.
If you go a little further east (like east of Pasadena) there are lots of interesting Chinese options. Of course, you can always make it at home too.
Your stifry looks delicious; much better than you’ll ever get from any takeout place. I can’t remember the last takeaway meal we had. We constantly hear in the news about restaurants crawling with cockroaches over here so it’s best to stay home!
Dont you love making Asian food at home. I guess you have to go futher up north for the good restaurants. But is more fun to make dishes like these.
This looks mouth watering delicious!!! Love the look and I can imagine the wonderful taste!!
I love serving stir-frys with noodles too
Did you say sriracha? I’m almost sure this is going to be to my liking
Quick, simple and tasty! Just the way I like it.
this looks so yummy. i can taste the crunchy snow peas right now. yum.
