We told you that summer’s prime ingredients were key players in a few of the dishes we made in the last couple of months. It has been hot enough in L.A. to confuse one into thinking it is July and not October. When the mercury hits 100 degrees on the thermometer, can you blame us for wanting to eat cooling dishes that require no prep over the stove or oven? That’s why there are tomatoes here. Tomatoes and tomatillos. Together, the two were the base for a super easy gazpacho that you will love to make. Next summer, that is.

One Way to Bring Out the Flavor

Roasting Tomatoes & Garlic-The Duo Dishes

We’ve recently been roasting garlic a lot, mostly for pizza, although it’s great in a number of dishes. Roasting brings out such a natural sweetness that even someone who claims not to like garlic could be persuaded. Once roasted, you can literally eat it right out of the peel, popping the fragrant clove right on your tongue. Or you could swipe it on a bit of bread or a cracker. This time, though, the roasted garlic would play a prime role in a blended salsa for a batch of tacos. Along with the garlic, a bunch of tomatoes also found themselves slow roasting in the oven. The aroma of roasting garlic and tomatoes filled the kitchen, exciting all for what was to come. The final meal was worth the wait.

'Tis the Season

We’re past Christmas, and the days leading up to jolly St. Nick’s arrival have come and gone. Now we’re just about to jump into a new year. It’s a beautiful thing. The holidays are closing shop, but we can still say ’tis the season–the season for soup. The season for soup actually started once fall hit, but now we’re well into winter. There’s no better time than now. Depending on where you are, it’s most likely quite chilly. Maybe you have snow or freezing rain. Here in LA, we do get our share of ‘winter’. It’s a strange type of winter for anyone who hails from the East coast, but it is possible for this ‘cold’ to set in your bones. Rather than hiding under your Snuggie, there are ways to warm your spirit. Soup does that. Make one big vat of soup, and you’ll never pick up the canned version again.

Gimme More Meat

Forget meat and potatoes; we’re feenin’ for meat and tomatoes.  We love a fresh, bright tomato based sauce over al dente noodle strands, but when you toss in your favorite meat, we think it gets just a bit better. Actually, forget the sauce too.  Let’s deconstruct it a bit and stick with the star players.  As with most foods, roasting tomatoes really brings out their sweetness, which is a great way to add a little life to even some of the winter season’s not so spunky red fruits.  Those ‘lil buggers mixed with something as flavorful as, say, Italian sausage will really rock your world.
