We’re on a Roll

Is there a dish that hearing its name alone brings out a childlike glee in you? Maybe that’s a dumb question—of course we all have a food that even the thought of eating gets our hearts racing. Well, lumpia is that special dish. We can’t really articulate why lumpia creates this kind of reaction. Maybe it’s the crunch of each bite. Maybe it’s the savory aspect of the filling. Or maybe it’s the soothing  rolling action that can produce dozens of lumpia in one sitting. But why waste time thinking about such things when we could be eating? Not too long ago, a trip to one of our local Thai markets revealed a couple of ingredients that would make this entire meal come together in a snap.

Let’s Go to the Isles

We’re happy to announce that today’s post is part of KCRW Good Food and Evan Kleiman’s Pie-a-Day feature. The summer season of pies will end with Good Food’s 2nd Annual Pie Contest. We attended last year, and the inaugural event was a blast. If you’re a loyal reader, then you may know that we love trying different recipes, especially those with strong cultural affiliation. We’re sharing our take on the Hawaiian favorite–haupia. This time, it’s in pie formation and topped with sweet pineapples. Read all about it HERE, and check the Good Food website daily for more!

Ride It Upside Down

Surprisingly, many of our friends have never tasted Pineapple Upside Down Cake. For those of you who have experienced this delightful dessert, you are fully aware of the inherent travesty in the previous sentence. Since we love to make mini versions of our favorite treats, especially desserts, we thought individual servings would be a fun way to share this cake with our friends, plus we wanted to initiate the new set of ramekins from World Market. If you remember our January Foodbuzz 24, 24, 24 dinner, they were part of the gift sets we gave to our friends for the evening. If you’re going to gift folks with kitchenware, you should at least give it a test run yourself!

Just Sweet Enough

Summer isn’t quite here yet, but the weather’s very strange right now, so most of us probably feel like we missed half of the spring season. Under these strange circumstances, let’s pretend that we are now well into summer. The hot, hazy days feel great when you end them with a light dessert. Pineapples are great on their own, but they could always use a little something to spice them up. One technique that truly makes the sweet nature of a pineapple sing is the flambé. Dash a bit of liquor over a hot flame, and you’ll have caramelized pineapples for everyone to enjoy.

The Quicker Picker Upper

Smoothies are a good way to start the day, no?  Full of vitamin C, full of fruity goodness.  Ever seen those huge smoothies from Jamba Juice?  Sometimes they are massive, and honestly, they’re just too much.  What if you just needed a shot of sunshine to help you start the day?  And no, not talking about shots of liquor kids!  We’re talking about shots of frozen fruit.
