Lumpia (Filipino Spring Rolls)
Poultry & Pork • Tags: filipino, lumpia, pineapple, Pork, shichimi togarashi, spring rolls
Is there a dish that hearing its name alone brings out a childlike glee in you? Maybe that’s a dumb question—of course we all have a food that even the thought of eating gets our hearts racing. Well, lumpia is that special dish. We can’t really articulate why lumpia creates this kind of reaction. Maybe it’s the crunch of each bite. Maybe it’s the savory aspect of the filling. Or maybe it’s the soothing rolling action that can produce dozens of lumpia in one sitting. But why waste time thinking about such things when we could be eating? Since we love to make mini versions of our favorite treats, especially desserts, we thought individual servings would be a fun way to share this cake with our friends, plus we wanted to initiate the new set of ramekins from World Market. If you remember our January Foodbuzz 24, 24, 24 dinner, they were part of the gift sets we gave to our friends for the evening. If you’re going to gift folks with kitchenware, you should at least give it a test run yourself!

Caramelized Pineapples
Other Sweet Treats • Tags: caramelized, flambe, ice cream, pineapple, rum, summer
Summer isn’t quite here yet, but the weather’s very strange right now, so most of us probably feel like we missed half of the spring season. Under these strange circumstances, let’s pretend that we are now well into summer. The hot, hazy days feel great when you end them with a light dessert. Pineapples are great on their own, but they could always use a little something to spice them up. One technique that truly makes the sweet nature of a pineapple sing is the flambé. Dash a bit of liquor over a hot flame, and you’ll have caramelized pineapples for everyone to enjoy.
