Spicy Shrimp with Rice Noodles
Seafood • Tags: Asian, blogger block, coconut vinegar, fish sauce, rice noodles, shrimp paste, Thai, umami
“What do you do when you don’t know what to do?” That was the question I tossed out into the world via Twitter last week. As I walked through the grocery store aisles, my stride was lazy and slow. My eyes scanned the bright, round produce, sterile metal cans and study cardboard boxed meals as I retraced my steps through the store, hoping something, anything, would literally hit me upside the head with inspiration. Instead, I just looked like that girl who was mumbling to herself as she retraced her steps through the store. Over and over again. Amir and I have both been running around with our respective day jobs lately, as well as planning a beer-paired menu for an upcoming birthday and a group trip to Portland. Some of the meals in our kitchens have been the kind of dishes you make for yourself when you don’t want to make anything at all. Others have been takeout. But today, oh today, we have a recipe hot and fresh just for you.

Pancit Bihon (Filipino Fried Rice Noodles)

With the holidays in full swing, this month’s Ethnic Exploration was hard to squeeze in. We have to stay true to schedule though, so here is the 2010 finale. Food can take you places, and this time, we’ve gone to the Philippines. We have made a couple of very traditional Filipino dishes before (adobo and lumpia), so maybe we are not brand new to the cuisine, but there is a lot of good Filipino food out there. We just barely skimmed the surface. A trip to a local market, and we were armed with a few must-haves to create another meal. It was easy, and it was good. And we can’t wait to share it with you.

Ga Kho (Vietnamese Caramelized Chicken)

Always on a mission to step outside of the box, here’s a a recipe from uncharted waters–Vietnamese cuisine. Can you believe we’ve never made one Vietnamese dish? When it comes to cooking, we both have our own personal missions and goals, and one of them is to try new recipes from all across the globe. About a month ago, we spent an afternoon noshing on a full array of Vietnamese food cooked by Hong and Kim of Ravenous Couple. When Hong heard we had never eaten Vietnamese before (not even the well known banh mi), he graciously extended an invite. They stuffed us to the gills with a myriad of foods that tickled the tongue with flavors. It was time to add Vietnamese food to the list of must-eats. As easy as it is to find a Vietnamese restaurant in this town, it’s more fun to try it at home.

Ginger Garlic Vegetable Stir Fry
Vegetarian • Tags: Asian, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, hoison, mushrooms, snow peas, soy sauce, sriracha, stir fry
Los Angeles is an impressive food city. Restaurants run by world famous chefs to small ethnic grocery stores packed with goodies you’ll never find in the usual markets. There is no need to go to chain eateries because every neighborhood has its share of unique dining spots. Most towns have local farmers markets at least once a week, so fresh and organic ingredients are always at the finger tip. We’re lucky. The only thing missing is good Chinese! Maybe that’s a bit harsh. It’s not that Chinese food is the worst here…it’s just not the same as what we remember from our days on the East coast. So when takeout just won’t do, here’s our solution.
