When Good Intentions Go Wrong

Although we don’t remember every lesson from the earliest days of school, the one that should remain is basic counting. We’ll return to this point shortly.

We had an angel food cake to make, which meant there would be a dozen yellow yolks just waiting to be used. We are not ones to waste our scraps. Crème brulée, flan, a fatty omelette, ice cream, even the Sinful Forbidden Dancing dessert…the choices were all there there. Instead, we decided to test a very basic recipe for an all egg yolk cookie. We had most of the ingredients and substitutions for the things that were missing. It would be a quick fix with our own added flair. We were ready to taste them! So ready we forgot that baking is all about measurements…and counting.

Another Crack at Semi-Homemade

Food Network’s Sandra Lee is not the only one who knows what it means to do semi-homemade.  Sometimes we like to take credit for delicious things that were already half prepared and all we did was add a couple of extra ingredients.  It’s all about the pizzazz people, and we know how to pizzazzicize when we need to.  When you’re in a crunch on time, but you need to whip up a little something fabulous, don’t hesitate to use a few star starters that will reduce your fretting in the kitchen.  We wanted a cookie, and we wanted it fast, so we did the only thing we could think of:  pull out the Pillsbury!

When I Dip, You Dip, We Dip

Remember when we were younger and cookie dipping signified Oreos in milk?  Maybe you moved on to biscotti and coffee as you got older.  Who knows, perhaps you enjoy a madeleine in your Earl Grey tea.  The point is, there’s something really satisfying and enjoyable about dunking something sweet and crunchy into something hot and liquid.  But what makes a good immersing item?  It definitely has to hold up post-submersion, so the initial crunch factor is key.  It should have its own individual flavors that won’t cause interference, making subtlety and cohesiveness are important.   And size is important too.  Something small enough to fit the round of a glass or mug, but sizeable enough to provide at least two chomps.  We found a cookie that has all three.  Well, maybe two and a half.  It has body, and the flavors are delicate.  But the size.  Well, you can get at least two bites out of it, but will you be able to hold yourself back from swallowing it whole?  That we cannot guarantee.

Cookies for Breakfast

Gingerbread cookies!  There’s nothing wrong with dessert as the first meal of the day.  Butter fulfills the dairy requirement, eggs provide protein and sugar supplies a burst of energy.  Wake up and start blending and rolling out that dough because there’s almost nothing wrong with substituting your Wheaties with one, two or even five warm, chewy, spicy gingerbread cookies.  If you have a glass of milk too, that should count for something!

Feeling Very Stuffed

When you think warm pockets of stuffed dough, maybe a savory empanada comes to mind.  Perhaps ravioli?  We threw down in the kitchen on a ravioli of a different kind.  The sweet kind.  These little sugar cookie babies are rolled out and dabbed with creamy Nutella and dribbled with melted chocolate.  If you can think of something better, we dare you to let us know!
