Our first Guest Test Kitchen of the New Year comes from our dear friend, Cameron. Cameron and Amir are extremely close friends who met in undergrad at the marvelous University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Heels!). Cameron currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina and is on track to become an expert baker. She’s always sharing pics of her latest, magazine-ready sweet creations. She raved on how spectacular these Banana Nutella Whoopie Pies tasted, so we’re ecstatic to share this one with you. Here’s Cameron with more…

Potato au Gratin is one of those dishes that you may have ordered from a restaurant too many times to count, but it may be likely that you’ve never had it at home. Well, at least that was the case for us, not counting the boxed versions our respective parents may have whipped up long ago. No offense to Betty Crocker, but it was time to experience the homemade, from scratch variety of this dish. Instead of scouring the web for recipe suggestions and inspiration, for once, I reached for my towering book shelf. Chrystal and I have dozens of cookbooks that make for lovely decoration, but shamefully, they are not used as often as they should be in the kitchen. That’s all about to change.

Sometimes you just need a cookie to make things better. Several cookies in fact. Sometimes several cookies arrive at your doorstep, and all is right in the world. These all seemed like promising sources of recommendation. Plus, it’s the time of year when baking runs rampant, so why not add another book to the collection and hopefully a great cookie to the pile. We are often offered the opportunity to review products, but we try to stay in line with things that we would actually enjoy. Now, the Tate’s Bake Shop Cookbook is on that list. It’s the season for giving, and we’d love to send a little something your way as part of the celebration.

Bringing the Bayou to You

Yes yes, it’s another post highlighting yet another dessert. What can we say? We have a strong sweet tooth. A meal just isn’t complete without a sweet finish. This one takes us back to a road trip though. Just over a year ago, we celebrated Memorial Day on a weekend getaway in Santa Barbara. Our first night there we ate at the incredible Palace Grill–a charming, Cajun-style restaurant. After eating our meal, we tried their Louisiana Bread Pudding Soufflé for dessert. This delectable dish was a hot mix of bread budding with Grand Marnier, raisins and a whiskey cream sauce. It was so bomb we had to take a picture, which previously lived in our About section for a while. If you saw the excitement and anticipation in our eyes, you’ll know why this version had to be made.
