Start Spreading the News

We are happy to announce another partnership with Alexia Foods! As you may recall, last year we were finalist in their “Reinvent a Classic” french fry contest, where our Herbes de Provence and Garlic Sweet Potato Fries were among the final four flavors selected. This time around, we’re officially “Alexia Tastemakers.” As Tastemakers, we’re one of 10 food bloggers who were chosen to serve as proud ambassadors to the brand. In the months to come, we’ll be sharing some wonderful things with you from our friends at Alexia, from new products and special promotions, to more of our own recipe creations, and more. And of course there will be a giveaway or two, so stay tuned.

Perhaps, though, the most exciting part of this new Tastemaker program is that you have a chance to become a brand influencer yourself. Alexia is looking for 5 more Tastemakers, and these final recruits will be everyday fans. The search is on for additional foodies who are just as passionate about Alexia products and can inspire fellow food enthusiasts. Have an original recipe idea? Know some easy holiday entertaining tips? Or if you’ve just been eager to flex your culinary and entertaining muscles, this is …

Another Slice of Pie

This past Saturday, Los Angeles celebrated the KCRW 4th Annual Good Food Pie Contest at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).  Chrystal and I won first place in the savory pie category a few years ago during the contest’s inaugural year, and we also entered the following year. When we got word of the upcoming competition, we thought, “Hey, why not, let’s give another go.” It would be fun to come up with a whole new pie creation and try to finish in the sweet department. With five different categories to choose from this year–fruit, nut, cream/chiffon/mousse, savory, or pies inspired by Chris Burden’s installation at LACMA, Metropolis II– our immediate decision was to nail down exactly what kind of pie we wanted to make. That question lead us to one pie-tastic conclusion: Banana Pudding Pie with Dulce de Leche.

Baked Coconut Shrimp Taco - The Duo Dishes

This has been a week of fish tacos! Are you sick of it? Hopefully not yet. Here are two more fish tacos to send you into the Cinco de Mayo weekend. Make sure the cerveza is cold, and slice up the limes. We know just how you should spend the weekend, and maybe it will include Alaska Seafood. Over the last few months, we have created fish taco recipes that have become part of Alaska Seafood’s fish taco promotion. As we wrap up the promotion, here are the final two recipes we’ll share with you that will hopefully find their way on your plates.

Ensenada Style Fish Taco The Duo Dishes

Though it is technically Monday, we imagine by the time you’re actually reading this it’ll be Tuesday! Here’s our latest Alaska Seafood fish taco contest entry. For April’s edition, we salute “Taco Tuesday,” which has become a common food fixture all over the country. As you can imagine, “Taco Tuesday” is especially popular around these parts of Los Angeles. There are a plethora of food joints near us that boast various taco specials every Tuesday, adding in their own celebrations of the fish taco. My personal favorite place for fish tacos, away from our kitchens of course, comes from a little whole-in-the-wall Mexican food chain in Long Beach called Hole Mole. Every Tuesday, you can get any taco on their menu for $1. Of course, all the tacos at Hole Mole are spectacular, but it’s their Ensenada style fish tacos that earn the crown.

Cornmeal Crusted Fish Tacos - The Duo Dishes

It has been a quiet time in the DD blog and social media world, but we’re here. We’re definitely here. We’ve been cooking and still using our friends as guinea pigs for the first-time creations that slide out of pots and pans. We made a few tacos, and a couple of friends came over to enjoy the experimental trial. Over dinner (and a bottle of champagne), we chewed and chatted, catching up, laughing and talking about upcoming events. There’s nothing that a little food can’t fix, even when you’ve been absent for a while.

Tyler Florence Interview - The Duo Dishes

We spent this past weekend in San Francisco with a few friends from home…and a bunch of bloggers. It was the 3rd Annual Foodbuzz Blogger Festival, and we were very lucky to attend on behalf of Alexia Foods this year. We were one of the 22 bloggers who created and submitted a new flavor for the “Reinvent a Classic” Challenge. The Alexia Food’s Research and Development team our Herbes de Provence and Garlic as one of the four finalists, which is a huge honor. Now it’s up to our friends and family again to help us push our way to the top! Voting is now open on the Alexia Foods Facebook page. Head over and cast your ballot for the flavor that sounds the best! Voting will run through March 30, 2012. Vote now, vote tomorrow, vote every day! In the meantime, here’s a look at our Saturday with Alexia Foods and the one and only Chef Tyler Florence.

Foodbuzz Header - The Duo Dishes

In just a few hours, we’ll be flying high on a quickie flight from SoCal to NorCal. For the third year in a row, we find ourselves at the Foodbuzz Blogger Festival in San Francisco. It kicks off with the usual Welcome Reception that, this year, will be combined with a blogger awards ceremony and dinner. We’ve always enjoyed the Welcome Reception’s previous set-up of kiosks and tables from all-you-can-sample food and beverage vendors, so the dinner and ceremony combination will be an interesting change. We’ll poke around the Taste Pavilion on Saturday afternoon and pick up more eats and sips, then finish off the affair with Sunday’s farewell brunch. It’s always a fun weekend, and we’ve been lucky to meet great people each time. This year, one of the big sponsors of the event is Alexia Foods, and they want you to be as involved in the Foodbuzz weekend as we are, even if you won’t be there. Keep reading to find out how.

Alexia Fries Herby #4 - The Duo Dishes

We’re one step closer to picking our final submission to the “Reinvent a Classic” French fry challenge. I am currently traveling around Chicago and Wisconsin, visiting family and old friends. This is the perfect opportunity to solicit even more feedback on the fry flavors we’ve been playing with for the last few weeks. It is crazy how we started this process on June 20th, and we’re already nearing the one month deadline for the flavor submission. We only have a few more days before we choose our best and final fry!

The Most Wonderful Time

Well folks, the moment has come. It’s the end of 2010! This year has been another stellar year for us, and we’re immensely thankful you tune in to see what we’re dishing up each week. Right now Chrystal is enjoying a much needed vacay in beautiful Italy, but before she departed we celebrated the holidays here in LA. Like us, a few of our friends didn’t travel to their perspective hometowns to spend Christmas. So, we did what we knew best to do–we gathered together and had a grand meal celebration, which we appropriately titled “A Misfit Christmas Dinner.”
