BLT Fixins-Duo Dishes

How many ways can you make your BLT?  There are a ton of variations, and we’ve seen them all.  Add avocado, insert a fried egg, lay on a slab of grilled salmon, sprinkle on sprouts.  If you’re a freak about bread, maybe you only have yours on white (not toasted) or wheat (burnt to a crisp).  How about those folks who like to add on the fixings?  Extra mayo, a dollop of mustard, squeeze in some ketchup, load on the black pepper.  It’s exhausting how such a simple sammie can get so complicated, but when it’s just right, it’s right.  Here’s another creation we had in mind when we made a loaf of bread last week.  It’s our simple, yet complex version of a classic.

Oh yes, this was the ticket!  It may seem a little weird to slather mayo on your cinnamon bread, but please trust when we say that it was totally fantastic.  Buttery avocado, salty bacon, crunchy onions and sweet, tart cranberries in one bite is a great taste bud overload.  This was one combination that we knew would be great when we decided to make that Cinnamon Cranberry Wheat Bread.  Now go forth and make your own creation!  There’s no acronym too long when you’re behind the BLT wheel.  Maybe we’ll toss this one over to Deb at Kahakai Kitchen for our Soup, Salad and Sammie Sundays.

BLTOA-Duo Dishes

Cinnamon Cranberry BLTOA – Serves 2
4 slices Cinnamon Cranberry Wheat Bread
4-6 slices maple bacon, cooked
1/2 large tomato, sliced
2-4 romaine leaves
1/4 red onion, sliced
1 medium avocado, sliced
Mayonnaise

1.   Spread all four slices of bread with mayonnaise.

2.   Layer two slices of bread with bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and avocado and top with remaining two slices.

I never get tired of new “BLT” combos. Last year, for us, it was the BAT sammich. Maybe this year we’ll branch out and try something totally new.

The bread here has got to make this sammich truly astounding.

  15. I love BLTs with avocado. For me the the key things are really crisp bacon and ripe summer tomatoes. (And hold the plain old mayo… add an herb aioli!)

  20. BLT – the key to my heart. Everything has to be the best. Applewood smoked bacon and summer sun-ripened tomatoes. Always a little mayo and on toasted multigrain (not too thick on the bread). Avocados, the teeniest bit of dijon, chives, grated onion welcome as well. When I’m really feeling it a fried egg, over hard. You guys are really making me hungry, especially since my husband’s at a work dinner and I didn’t feel like cooking so I had cereal and nectarines for dinner.
