Blueberry Ginger Muffins 2-The Duo Dishes

We get emails every now and then with questions and comments about us and the site, so why not share some of that info with everyone.  Even if your question’s answered below, we give you permission to email us anyways!

•HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME ‘THE DUO DISHES’?

The name just came to us one day.  We were brainstorming what we do, and we figured that we’re two folks who like all things about food–talking about it, learning about it, teaching others about it and, of course, cooking it.  We dish up food and dish about food, hence The Duo Dishes.

•WHO ARE CHRYSTAL AND AMIR ANYWAYS?  HOW DID YOU GUYS MEET?

We did not grow up together, but we did attend the same illustrious university–The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Go Heels!  We met during our stint working for the school’s student television station.  Chrystal was one of the co-producers of a soapy drama, and Amir was an actor in a comedy series.  Never was there talk of food during those days, and look where we are now!  Oh, and we’re not a couple couple.  We’ve been asked many times if we are married or dating, and the answer is an emphatic (but loving) no. No lovebirds here, just friends!

•DO YOU WORK IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY NOW?

Amir works for a television network. Chrystal is a freelance culinary consultant and writer for food publications.

•WHERE DO YOU DO MOST OF YOUR COOKING?

We rotate between each other’s apartments. 

•DO YOU BOTH EAT THE SAME THINGS ALL THE TIME?  HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO COOK?

We definitely have different tastes, things we each prefer and dislike.  Many of the recipes we cook come about based on cravings, a desire to experiment in the kitchen, stumbling upon a new ingredient in the market, recommendations or suggestions from friends and family, menus we devise for dinner parties and special occasions, etc.  We don’t always agree on the outcome of every recipe, and if we think substitutions or additions could be made, we’ll usually note that in each post.  For the most part, we do enjoy what we cook, and that is why we share it, but if we make a mess of something, you’ll hear about it too.

•DO YOU CREATE ALL OF YOUR OWN RECIPES?

The vast majority of the recipes we have on the site are meals we have cooked on our own, in our own kitchens, with our own recipes.  If they specifically originated from somewhere else, we note that in the post.  Although this wide world of Web is a public forum, we would appreciate a credit/link from anyone choosing to use, replicate or distribute our recipes.  As the old saying goes, do unto others…!

•THERE ARE A LOT OF DESSERTS ON THIS SITE!

Yes, there are!  We love our sweets, adore our desserts, idolize our pastries–whatever you want to say!  Most people seem to feel the same way, so desserts are fun to make and share.  We think it’s safe to say that there are a variety of other dishes that are in our repertoire, including a good amount of vegetable based and vegetarian dishes.  Don’t believe it?  Check the recipe index.

•SO WHY DO A GOOD NUMBER OF YOUR VEGETARIAN RECIPES INCLUDE ANIMAL PRODUCTS?
We know there are different levels of vegetarians out there, so we try to keep it simple by including all of our meatless dishes in that list.  The recipes may still include butter, cheese, milk, eggs, honey, etc., so if you’re vegan, they may not fly, but they can be adapted.  Do not fret though. If you’re looking for vegan recipes, do a quick search, and you’ll find a few that will surface. 

•WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FOODS?

For Amir, it’s most definitely pancakes. Even if they are on your own plate, he may sneak a bite. Like a true Libra, Chrystal has a hard time making decisions like these, but she does enjoy any and everything involving sweet potatoes.

•WHAT CAMERA DO YOU USE FOR YOUR PHOTOS?

In the beginning, we were using little point and shoots. Now we’ve both purchased our own digital SLR cameras–Chrystal rocks a Nikon, Amir weilds a Canon. Neither one of us is a master photographer, but we are slowly learning how to take better pictures every day. It’s a learning process, that is for sure! We consider all of the images taken by our cameras to be our property, so if you choose to right click and save any picture for your own usage, ask first and give us a credit/link!

•ARE YOU GUYS ON TWITTER, MYSPACE, HI5, FACEBOOK, ETC.?

The world of technology and social networking is doing the most!  How can we even keep up?  We are on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Foodbuzz.  You can send us emails through the Contact page.  If you post a question in the comments section as well, you will get a response.  We do our best to stay in communication no matter what.

•WHO DESIGNED YOUR WEBSITE?

As of early 2011, we complete our first major web redesign. It’s a pleasure to say that Emily Carlin of Swank Web Style is responsible for our current branded look.

•DO YOU HAVE AN EMAIL NEWSLETTER?

No, not yet, but you can sign up for our RSS feed!  Click the orange and white button on the top right of the page.

•I HAVE A BLOG AND WOULD LIKE TO BE ON YOUR BLOG ROLL.  WANT TO EXCHANGE?

Sure, we can link up.  We do prefer to stick with recipe blogs that are current and frequently updated. 

•DO YOU ACCEPT SAMPLES?  I HAVE A FOOD PRODUCT I’D LIKE TO SEND YOUR WAY.

Why yes, we’ll accept samples. We are open to anything, but we do not feel obligated to post our reviews or developed recipes unless we truly want to share the good (or bad…yikes) with readers. Oh, and yes, we do seek compensation for projects that are related to those samples. Please check out our For Hire page for more information on collaborations.

•SO, WAIT. ARE YOU GUYS A COUPLE?
Confusion remains about this fact! No, we are not a couple. Not in any way, shape or form. Amir is actually in a relationship, and Chrystal is single and continues to mingle. Hopefully, this clears up any doubt on your part!
